The Upper George Hotel in Halifax is a popular venue for watching live football, featuring multiple large-screen TVs and access to Sky Sports, TNT Sports, and terrestrial channels. The pub offers a vibrant atmosphere, especially during major fixtures, with promotions such as 10% off selected drinks for app users and a free drink offer when wearing England team colours during key matches. While the pub has historical significance as the founding location of the Halifax Panthers rugby club, it is known to attract both home and away fans on matchdays, making it a mixed venue for supporters. Additionally, the pub serves a variety of food options, including daily specials like Fish Fridays and Build Your Own Burger Wednesdays, enhancing the matchday experience.
Cracking Green King pub in Halifax. Decent Danny friendly beers on tap 🍻 Friendly service. Lovely beer garden and cosy interior, what's not to like! 👍🏼
When I walked into the upper George I was blown away by how friendly it was. However I was incredibly shocked to see that the Assistant Manager was eating a dry crumpet, untoasted in the beer garden and without shame. It's a very diverse staff team too for example the Landlord is a Leprechaun and they have even employed a welsh person and not only that they let him wear people clothes. The beer is okay but they don't have wobbly bob anymore and haven't stocked owt from the Orkney brewery ever.
Always appreciate a pub that opens before midday all week (apart from Sunday) serving a wide choice of well kept cask ales. Reasonable prices including CAMRA discount makes this a welcome entry in the Good Beer Guide.
Out and about in Halifax with Madge. We made a bee line for this Greene King pub that features in the 2025 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Easy to miss as the pub is hidden down a narrow alley. Only sell one or two of their own real ales, the other six or seven being guest ales. Heavy focus on Yorkshire breweries on our visit. Had a pint of Brew York 3.9% bitter. Madge a lager. Super traditional pub interior, lots of dark paneling. Rooms wrap around the central bar. Separate pool room. Lots of TV'S. Rear outdoor beer patio a little bleak. Cask Marque pub. Live music on Saturday nights.
Friendly pub well hidden in a alleyway good selection of beers
