This pub holds a most authentic feel in its walls with centuries old history, lots of cozy nooks and crannies and a cheerful warm welcome from all the staff. It’s the perfect place to settle down for proper British food or a quick pint whilst enjoying the traditional, spooky yet cozy aesthetics it has to offer. Definitely a go to spot to visit whether you’re coming from the next town over or flying in from abroad to explore Yorkshire history and all the wonders here. It’s tucked in through the back of an alleyway entrance but don’t let this put you off! There’s good reason to why it’s a hidden gem 💎 There’s plenty to admire here, from the variety of comfort food (veg and vegan included) to the plethora of drinks at the bar. It’s so worth popping in for a real feel of ye olden days.
Visited the oldest pub in York and was glad we did. The pub itself had so much character and history it was fascinating. The service was really good with friendly and helpful staff. The beers were really good, especially the beer flight, with a choice of 3 to try different types without drinking too much! We ordered the Duck Hash and it was delicious and filling. Definitely worth a visit when in York.
Been here twice whilst in York. The pub is pretty big once you meander through the entrance of a narrow bricked corridor. There is loads of outside seating at the front and back of house. Lovely ambience & orientation of seating with very polite staff. The fish & chips were fantastic & the steak & ale pie was oozing in boozy deliciousness, it paired very well with the grilled cabbage.
May 23, 2025. We walked in to have some drinks and dinner, and it looked like a fun place; however, the staff was quite rude and dismissive. We sat at a table for awhile to wait for service, and finally decided they didn't deserve our business. We had a great dinner at Hole in the Wall, instead.
I didn’t eat here - I just had a couple of beers. It’s a nice pub. Old but not as old as I expected Yorks oldest pub to be. My local has a few hundred years on this place! Anyway, it’s a nice pub with good beer and friendly service, a roaring fire (which is nice on a wet January day) and clean toilets. Recommended.
