The Eagle & Child is a historic pub located in the heart of York, UK. The pub features a cosy interior with traditional decor, including exposed brick walls and wooden beams. The menu offers a range of classic pub dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, as well as a selection of beers, wines, and cocktails. The pub also has outdoor seating in a courtyard area, making it a great spot to enjoy drinks and food on a sunny day. The Eagle & Child also offer live music and other events throughout the year.
Delicious food in a nice atmosphere. A great spot to stop for lunch after touring York Minster. We were told to grab any table and order at the bar. Service was quick and friendly. The food was tasty and of good quality with big portions. The interior is clean and well designed.
The food and drinks here are unbelievable, super tasty. I recommend the Steak and Ale pie and the sticky toffee pudding. A bit pricier than other pubs in York that serve food, but it's worth the price in my opinion. The ambiance inside is great for chatting, having a pint and relaxing with friends.
Loved the food, shame my first preference sold out but some very tasty dishes and just the best steak pie! Great to see chips actually home made too. We really enjoyed the Austrian white wine. It would be great to include something other than brownie or ice-cream for gluten free puddings, although nice, predictable and does not reflect the effort made in your main courses. Will definitely recommend to friends visiting York.
I really enjoyed my lunch here, opting for Sausage and Mash, it was a cut above the average, served with Kale and roast carrots, Parsnips and a really tasty sauce. My wife went for the Fish and chips, great chips but the batter was thick and soggy, she set it aside and enjoyed the rest. It was quiet for a Friday lunch but I guess that's the post Crhristmas lull. Run by the Leeds brewery its a lovely old pub with leaning walls and period features dating from the 17th century we were informed. There are a few tables in the back and more upstairs. Its not table service so you have to order drinks at the bar, likewise with your food order. We had a misunderstanding as I was told by the Barman that the Midnight bell I ordered was £3 a pint (Feb 2026) if we ordered food too, however on the final bill it was listed at £6 a pint, I queried this and was told that it only applied to the Lunch menu, given that we had lunch and chose from the only menu we had, I felt just a little misled. I wouldn't have selected anything differently. However I enjoyed my visit and would definitely return.
Wish I had discovered this place sooner in my four years of trips to York! We dined here for lunch one day and came back later in the week for dinner & pub quiz. They offer a solid pub menu with prices better than most in the area. The food was fantastic! The atmosphere is authentic and offers a few settings in one location: quiet dining tables great for families, couples, & large groups, a decorative outdoor garden, lively lounge area at the entry/front window sections for libations, upstairs has a unique private dining cove for date night, and rooms to host private large group dining. Our favorite part besides the food was the designated room for pub quiz night (you could actually hear the questions) that has a door/stairs leading to the outdoor beer garden. For those that are pub quiz fans: this one was particularly fun and creative. They had categories that were varied enough for every person on your team to contribute. The music/audio section and the finale of extra point bonanza was fantastic!! The writer for this pub quiz deserves props! The winner Well Yes, we did win!) received a bottle of wine and a prize from the box. It was by far one of our favorite pub quiz nights yet! Well done Eagle and Child! And for those that like hidden gems, there is a room upstairs with the preserved graffiti from the 1960's Rolling Stone's (written in Mick Jagger's girlfriend's lipstick)
