A dependably good pub with friendly staff and ample seating, is The California. They have a decent collection of beers on tap, a good spread on the menu, plus a parking lot despite being (somewhat) close to Sutton high street. All in all, highly recommended!
I've just had the Rainbow Lasagne and it was delicious. Loads of salad with it too. It was £11.79 but we had a voucher today which brought the price down a bit. My wife was happy with her gammon too. Staff were friendly and efficient.
Absolutely love this place! We come often to spend a time with the family. Lovely staff, great atmosphere. As a football fan, California always showing great matches! Recently we celebrated my hubby big 50! That was amazing! They have accommodated all out request :) Definitely recommend!
We have been coming to this pub for years and due to the deterioration in standards we took a 12 month hiatus. Since we returned 6 months ago, the new team, food and service have been top drawer! Hats off to the new team they have revived a great pub! A special shout out to Chef T who delivered 23 plates of great food for us tonight!
The main issue was my 2 friends and I ordered a main course each. The manager said to order at the bar so we did. I ordered 3 meals and 3 drinks and paid. After finishing our lunch, I went back to the bar and the manager (Fernando) said that I cannot order desert now as the bill had been paid and therefore closed; so we couldn't benefit from a 2 course meal each. He started to raise his voice and he kept saying that it is stated on the menu that you have to order all of the courses together; which it didn't! I ordered the 3 deserts and then sat at the table and re-read the menu. Not only does it not say that you have to order them together, but when I went back and showed him this, he said and pointed to the top of the menu ' where it said 1 course, 2 courses and 3 courses with the prices', that it says it there!! He was more rude every time that he spoke to me and he keep referring to me as 'darling'. I explained that i wasn't his darling and that whilst I was still talking to him in a normal voice, he was rude and loud. He then said that there was lots of customers waiting to order behind me. I explained that I was also a customer trying to order and that I had as much right to be treated with respect and listened to add the people in the queue behind me. I explained that we live 25 miles away and we was visiting so we had not eaten in this type of pub before. It would have been very helpful to ask if we might have liked to keep our bill open just in case we wanted to order any more courses; but this wasn't offered at all. All he said was, if you want desserts, you have to pay full price. I ordered the three desserts; 2 sticky toffee puddings, one with custard and one with ice cream and a cinnamon and apple pie with custard). When they came, both of the sticky toffee puddings came plain. We asked the waitress where the custard and ice cream was that we'd ordered to accompany them. She came back with a portion of ice cream and some custard, but by now the puddings were cold. This was absolutely the worst experience and meal that we've had, the mushy peas that came with the mini haddock were cold and then we had the cold dessert because they didn't have the ice cream or custard served with them at the time they was brought out; only the cinnamon and apple pie came with the custard. This was meant to be a Christmas meal for three friends as we're all grieving as we've recently lost our husbands. I am 56 years of age and never in my life have I been treated in this way. Fernando was very welcoming when we first walked in and informed us that we had to enter our car registration. However, that was where the pleasantries ended. I look forward to your comments.
