The Red Lion is a traditional pub located on the top of Stow Hill in Newport, UK. It was originally a coach house pub in 1848, with coachmen and their horses often stopping there. The pub has a rich history and retains much of its original charm. It is known for its emphasis on sport, particularly rugby union, with displays of WRU club crests and pictures. The pub is a regular haunt for followers of Newport Saracens, Newport RFC, and the Dragons teams. It also features a Shove Ha'penny board, a traditional pub game where Newport remains one of its few strongholds. The pub is situated just far enough away from the nightclub scene to retain a convivial atmosphere, making it a popular spot for both home and away fans to gather before and after matches.
Absolutely cracking pub, proper. Great atmosphere, Craig the landlord's a legend, best place for a drink in Newport.
A really spot on old fashioned pub. We didn't have food, I'm not sure they did food. It was a wee bit noisy, not with music, but with people having conversations. This place keeps a really great pint, and doesn't charge the earth. It has that old fashioned pub lived in smell of beer. The only thing missing was the smell of cigarette smoke. This was a walk down memory lane.
This is the definition of a proper British pub. It's got the look, the smell, and the funny and awesome people that staff it! The drinks here are great but even greater are the prices. Definitely worth a visit for one or two whilst watching some sport on the big TVs they have.
Absolutely brilliant little pub - landlords are amazing was here for a wedding reception and Craig and Tom are absolutely wonderful. Want a nice drink down a local with a good vibe? This is the place to go!!
What a great boozer. Popped in for a quick pint but ended staying for a couple as the atmosphere was so warm. Wished I had time to stay longer. Old school style pub and mean that in the most positive of ways. I'll be going back for sure!
