📍 1.2 miles from SMH Group Stadium
Listed in an away-travel pub guide, The Market Pub is a town-centre option used by visiting supporters. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Chesterfield railway station and roughly 1.4 miles from the SMH Group Stadium—handy for a bus/taxi hop or a brisk walk to the match. The pub serves food at set lunch and evening times (and has up-to-date menus), which suits pre- and post-match plans. It’s also known for a rotating range of cask and guest beers (with specific breweries frequently pouring), appealing to fans who want a quality pint before heading to the ground.
Lovely pub in the heart of Chesterfield town centre with a huge turnaround of customers, most of which, are eating from the quite extensive menu. We went on a Saturday afternoon at a peak time. All the staff on both sides of the bar were very well trained, attentive, friendly & obliging. There was a choice of ale & the two different one's we had including White Rat were exceptional. The decor & lighting give the pub a warm, homely feel. We had one of the pies & mash & one of the double burgers (unusually with haggis as a topping) with real chips. It was all very good quality although the pie, mash & veg sat on a huge bowl of gravy wouldn't suit everyone. Also, we were warned that the homemade chips were large & again they wouldn't be for everyone but fries are offered as an alternative. The portion sizes aren't huge either but I would definitely come again if in the area.
One of the best homemade burgers we have ever had, top it off with a inches cider too.
We visited The Market Pub in Chesterfield on a Sunday evening just after Christmas. I’d chosen this place to eat as looking at the reviews it seemed to be a decent place. Upon entry it seemed to be a pretty cosy pub, I’d made a reservation which was a good thing as it was very popular for people eating there. We were directed to a table which was acceptable although the lighting was pretty dim, there was a candle which made it atmospheric but some of the other tables were better lit. First of all the staff were lovely, very accommodating, pleasant and helpful. The young lady who took our order was spot on. Before we had chance to look over the menu she did tell us the very long list of dishes that weren’t available, it was just after Christmas after all and they hadn’t had the deliveries yet. Luckily what we both wanted was still available. I had the Surf and Turf and my husband opted for a Guinness, steak and cheddar pie which we were told only had a couple of pieces left. We weren’t waiting too long for the food and whilst it was very nice with quality ingredients I was disappointed with the amount of food you got for the price you paid for it. This is my main disappointment as I expected the plates to be much fuller than what we got. The pie was a small slice with mash, one broccoli, one cauliflower and 3 carrot strips. It was absolutely swimming in gravy which would have been much better served in a separate gravy boat so you could add as much as you wanted it cost £18.50. I opted for the surf and turf and while I recognise steak can be a premium product for the amount I got along with a few prawns and some large chips and a bit of broccoli I don’t think it fairly reflected a £26 price bracket. I also had onion rings at £4 and was still feeling very hungry afterwards, a shame really as I was really expecting it to be a hearty meal. Because we both still felt hungry we also opted for desserts, my husband had apple crumble and I had sticky toffee pudding, these were the only two things still available on the dessert menu. For the price at £8 each these dishes were small, my pictures don’t do it justice but the sticky toffee pudding was one of the smallest slices I’ve seen, perhaps I’ve gotten unlucky and they made the pieces smaller to try and make it go around for longer but I seriously could have eaten the sponge cake in within two big bites. The plate it also came on was very heavily marked / scratched. Very disappointing and would definitely not recommend the venues desserts. From what I could see the pub was very popular and it looks like it hosts lots of events and we were fortunate to be able to take part in a pub quiz they put on which was fun and we enjoyed. Big shout out to the staff who were absolutely brilliant but I can not recommend this place for the food, although it was nice the portion sizes were a real let down for me, perhaps we were unlucky with it being just after Christmas and they were trying to stretch out whatever ingredients they had. I would however visit the pub again as it had a great atmosphere but definitely only for drinks and not a meal.
Excellent pub with an incredible range of beers. We were there for a group (12) meal and all the food came out together, no problems. My lamb was slightly fatty but that's to be expected, I still enjoyed it. Great atmosphere and is a great 'pub' pub not just for food.
On recommendations I went to try the vegan fish n chips. It was really lovely tofu in a crispy batter with homemade chunky chips, vegan mayo and mushy peas. My Son enjoyed the vegan burrito. We didn't have too long to wait for piping hot fresh food and excellent service.
