Handy for an away day base in Hull city centre: the pub is close to bus routes and Hull Paragon railway station, making it a practical meeting point before or after the match. It serves cask ale (e.g., Wainwright) and offers home-cooked food, so you can get a proper pre-match feed. Opening hours run to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, which helps for later kick-offs or post-match drinks.
Was advised to call at this pub by a work colleague and so glad I did. Proper pub with a great welcome by the landlord. Music was on and playing some good tracks too. Good choice of drinks and very reasonable in price. Been coming to this city for years and didn't know this was here. True gem of a pub and definitely worth the walk to it.
A beautiful traditional pub with a fantastic atmosphere. Dave and the team go above and beyond to make everyone feel genuinely welcome from the moment you walk in. Great quality beers, brilliant drink offers, and always something going on—from fun quizzes to live music. It’s a place full of character, warmth, and community spirit. Without a doubt one of the very best pubs in Hull—we’ll be regulars for a long time to come!
Fantastic local pub. Since Dave the landlord took over, the atmosphere has been brilliant. Always something going on—quizzes, darts, football predictions and more. Great beers, cocktails and shot menus. Friendly crowd and well worth a visit.
Wow it’s been two decades since I have been to what I call a proper pub. On a visit to Hull from Manchester we called in before watching a show at the theatre. Dave the landlord and his sister Rebecca were so welcoming to two strangers and Joe behind the bar gave us a warm welcome. Went back after the show and had the best night sampling the entire shot menu. The walls are adorned with pictures and messages from various famous people who have visited. We loved the jukebox and even pickled eggs behind the bar. The Halloween decorations are amazing so much effort put into it. One of the really great things about this lovely pub is that there was a good mix of age ranges and I didn’t see a single person sat staring at their mobile phone. People of Hull if you’ve never called in here you are missing a real treat. A final shout out to Joe’s friend Dan thank you for your company. We wish you well Dave and hope you have many prosperous years.
Under New Management! My new review. Old English Gentleman is under New management and it's a delightful local pub in the Theatre District in Hull. New landlord Dave and Kylie are a welcome change. Minutes away from Hull New Theatre and a 5 minute walk to Hull City Hall. Excellent choice of beers. Plenty of spirits to choose from. It's a very friendly pub. A good group of regulars mix with the regular theatre crowd. It's quite common to see the celebs from the shows. It doesn't serve any food at the moment. Prices for lager start at £3 during the week. They have special offers everyday. Wine starts at £3.75 for a small. Usually two hand pull ales on at all times. £2.70 on a Tuesday. I'd recommend the pub highly to anyone looking for a quick pint or a longer session. Plenty of food options nearby. It's changed a lot in the last couple weeks, all for the better. Highly recommend a visit.
