📍 2.9 miles from The Coventry Building Society Arena
A central, city-centre JD Wetherspoon that opens early for breakfast and serves food all day, making it a reliable pre-match meet for early kick-offs. It’s around 1 km from Coventry rail station, so away supporters coming by train can gather here before heading to the Coventry Building Society Arena. Crucially, Cardiff City’s official away-day guide specifically advises visiting supporters to use The Flying Standard, indicating it welcomes away fans on matchdays. The venue is also listed by the city-centre guide as showing major sporting events on terrestrial TV, adding to its pre-match appeal, even if premium sports channels aren’t advertised.
This is a weather spoons so nothing elaborate going on here except cheap beer and lots of uncomfortable seats. There is a sense of community and the people are generally friendly. The toilets need a good clean like a jet wash. Thr food is basic as one would expect. The entire environment felt very outdated and needs new carpets and definitely new more comfortable seating. The staff are great and served with a smile so that's a bonus point 👊 All in all if you want a quick pint or something basic to eat then this place might meet your criteria.
Visited the Flying Standard with a friend whilst we were in Coventry and we bought a afternoon deal meal and very nice it was too. Despite it being a Monday Afternoon the pub was quite busy, but we found a lovely warm cosy booth to sit in and found it relaxed and nice for a nice conversation ☺️
Popped in on a 30°c day for a sit-down with a half-pint of ale, and soft drinks for the family. The building from the outside has a lovely historic charm. Once you get inside, it's a little grotty but pretty much what you'd expect from a Wetherspoon pub. Still a great beer selection and prices though, and fast service via the app.
Visited while staying nearby in Coventry. What a magnificent looking Spoons this is. In glorious sun it looked even better. It was quiet as it was relatively early so got a table in the window. Ordered our breki and it arrived quite quickly. Delicious as always. It is situated near the shops and close to the bus stops and nearby bus station. Plenty of areas and also a little upstairs bar and seating area. I can see this getting very busy of an evening. A lovely spoons with lots of history.
Perfect place to spend the evening, lot of food selection to choose from with cozy ambiance.
