Televised football is a focus here: during Euro 2024 the pub created a fanzone and showed matches across seven screens, including a large 4m×2m outdoor screen, and it advertises regular “Live Sports.” It also sits within the revived “Deptford Bank” cluster with nearby pubs like The Ship Isis and The Kings Arms, giving groups multiple options pre/post-match. For logistics, WhatPub notes the Saltgrass is close to bus routes and about a 15-minute walk to Millfield or University Metro stations, which helps with matchday travel. Recent check-ins show a varied beer selection (e.g., Seven Bro7hers Easy IPA, ABK Hell, Augustiner Hell, plus Carling), so mixed groups can find something they like. Food has been available via street-food traders on Saturdays, with plans flagged to introduce a regular menu.
Lovely friendly atmosphere. Excellent selection of drinks.
Tried one of their sundau dinners today, no booking just showed up. Dinner was served within 20 minutes of being there no complaints about service! Beef dinner and a pork one, both very tasty but small portions of meat. Had to pay extra for cauliflower cheese and only got one little dish of veg to share ( 1 piece of broccoli each) . Yorkshire was dry but the roasties were the best I have ever tasted really nice!! Lush gravy plenty of flavour in veg aswell. No complaints except portion size 7.5/10 They have a nice beer garden and sell clwb tropicana! Used to do 2 printers and have a dj outside not sure if they still do now however. Not a good location as its a taxi to anywhere else.
Fantastic afternoon tea, kids loved it and I enjoyed mine. Very reasonably priced I will definitely be back 👍
For a pub that never has no body in when I visit perhaps train youre barsatff some manners and courtesy you should talk to you're regulars rather than play with cards at the bar it really is pointless and I think you should give the 2 wingback chairs back to the retirement home
Missing the diving helmet, painted a trendy grey and the jukebox is a miss. But this is still the Salty and one of the best pubs in Sunderland. Go there
