📍 0.9 miles from Stadium of Light
Close to the Stadium of Light (listed as ~0.64 miles), The Cliff is a known matchday pub for Sunderland AFC and even lays on a shuttle bus to the ground. It shows live sport on big screens, useful for early kick-offs or post-match games. Food is served daily, with a Sunday carvery, so fans can get a pre- or post-match meal. Overall, it’s a convenient home-fan meetup spot with TVs for football and regular food service within walking distance of the stadium.
Found this place totally by accident with a Google Search and it was an amazing find. Unfortunately for those working at and running the place it was empty apart from ourselves when we got there and I have no idea why. The food was fantastic. Beef bun had the best beef we have had in a very long time, it just melts and in your mouth and the gravy was top notch. Shipyard to drink is far from the worst choice ever to accompany a meal. Absolute hidden gem here. Thoroughly recommend the place 100%. Only gave the atmosphere a 4 ⭐ because we were the only customers in and it's a big pub. Lots of street parking just outside and nearby. Five minutes walk from the beach and sea front.
DELICIOUS!!!! I've been before for a Sunday carvery which is really good. This time was a bank holiday Monday, we fancied some proper pub grub and this place didn't disappoint. Portions were plentiful, tasty, and a bargain for what you got. I went with lasagne and it was piping hot, loads of mince and plenty of cheese. Proper home cooked chips aswell. The boyfriend got a Kiev parmo, with fries and again the portions were crazy. Nice traditional pub, easy to get too. Only issue, sort of, is parking. It's on street parking only so you it's pot luck at how close you get to the door as it's a very popular place. Extra bonus, it's a 2 minute drive to the beach so you can walk off the mammoth dinner or work up an appetite before. Xmas edit: if you want the Xmas fayre menu you need to book in advance, we just walked in, so ordered from the menu and the specials board. Massive portions and very delicious as always.
I've been here quite a few times over the years but I think today's visit has put me off returning. It was always top choice for food but the last few times we've been, its been so disappointing. The veggie lasagne was always a rich tomato taste with beautifully browned cheese and came with a lovely fresh salad, chips and garlic bread. Today I had my order taken then told 20 minutes later it wasn't available and could I get something else. Wish I'd said not to bother as what I was given was barely warm with uncooked cheese and the filling was unpleasant. The desert didn't look or taste homemade, infact it didn't really have a taste at all and everyone at the table said there's was hard and tasted stale. When something like this has happened on a previous visit, we've mentioned it and got an appologie, but it wasn't worth it as nothing change, so either there's been a change in chefs or something else, but whatever it is, it has made our decision not to return.
A great pub that has friendly staff and serves great food. The food served is lovely and a lot tastier and better for value than some of the other pubs around the sea front. They have a variety of specials that change and always offer something new. The base menu also has a good choice and everything is always fresh and tasty!
This is a hidden gem of a pub. Tucked away in a quiet spot, it's a lovely pub with a great, friendly atmosphere. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was very tasty and decent sized portions. We will definitely be back.
