Black Garter is a city-centre pub a short walk from St James’ Park (around 1,600 feet), making it handy pre- or post-match. The pub promotes live football screenings (Premier League, Champions League and more) and highlights a lively matchday atmosphere, with big screens noted by local guides. There’s also a simple food offer (pizza) for an easy bite on the day. The venue’s own sport pages say everyone’s welcome and even mention helping home or away fans find a spot, indicating a mixed crowd on matchdays.
Called in for one on the way to the station. A Monday afternoon and you wouldn't get a seat it was that busy. Some great characters in it. Racing on the TV and plenty of staff to make sure you get that refreshment quickly ⚫⚪
First time in this bar in the 22 years I have lived in the UK. It had such a reputation for being rough as a chip. It can't be further from the truth. Amazing community of people who clearly have history together. The place is friendly, drinks are a good price. Staff friendly and happy. The entertainment was good. If your passing drop in.
My dad Ray Bennell lived for this pub. He drank here for years 7 days a week on a night time. Dot was the manageress at the time before she took over the clock nearby. He died nearly 2 year ago and Dot and many of the regulars turned up at his funeral. I know it's a late review it's been a difficult few years but Ray was at him happiest propping up the bar. I'm sure many will remember him. My mam is now in a home with dementia and still asks if he's coming in to see her, which is heartbreaking. Live life to the full that's all I have to say
Good place for karaoke, very cheap drinks, crowd is generally okay. The place has a reputation for being a bit rough however you will get no trouble unless you're looking for it, noticed very few altercations here, many places are worse in this respect. The crowd is very responsive to the karaoke singers, definitely give it a go if you like a good sing.
Great atmosphere, MXR app very popular and very reasonable prices too. Neck Oil went down well, £4.70
