Popular with Arsenal supporters before games and close to Highbury & Islington station, The Alwyne Castle works well as a meet-up spot on matchdays. It shows major football tournaments (e.g., World Cup) and other live sport, creating a game-day atmosphere, and it serves food from a full pub menu so you can eat before heading to the Emirates. A large outdoor seating area helps accommodate crowds pre- and post-match.
They used to cook much better. We’re locals, and for the first time in our lives we saw “nachos” made from leftover lavash, thrown into the fryer — and of course they were greasy. The fried chicken tasted like it had been cooked the day before, kept in the fridge, and lost any crunch it once had. Hopefully things magically improve in 2026, because it won’t be easy — there are plenty of pubs around you serving much better food for the same price (or less).
This place was an absolute mess. First of all, prices are insane. Unc charges £10 for some ugly overcooked rubbery stake (see image below). I asked for medium rare and got some fatty car tire steak . took 1 and a half hour wait for 5 kids meals. The food was practically frozen and they were essentially ready meals. My child found a vape in the toilets, which is genuinely horrific(he asked what it was and requested to try it, which I promptly denied). My mates son got the wrong meal (he asked for chicken skewers and he got an Iceland minute meal). The kids drink sizes were hilarious. I could finish it in a sip and still be thirsty. Keep in mind this took 3-4 business days to arrive to our table. The view was nice but the background npcs are so loud. Make them quieter. I am severely disappointed in Unc, and I hope me and the other gooners will have a happier goon elsewhere.
Really nice pub in a great location. The food was lovely with 3 courses for £24 after 5pm. I had the miso chicken skewers, chicken schnitzel and apple and rhubarb crumble which was all really tasty. I was surprised at how good it was for the price in that part of London and decent portions too. Staff all lovely and I'd recommend it for away fans as long as not in colours etc. About a 15 min walk from The Emirates. Would definitely go back if in that part of the world again.
Nice pub. General good atmosphere and in summer the beer garden looks like it would be nice but prices are through the roof! £8 pint and £13! glass of white wine. I had to ask them to check what i bought when two drinks came in at £21. Couldn't afford to buy repeated rounds at those prices. Not far round the corner the prices were more reasonable
Fantastic pub, for a roast in the garden. Fantastic staff. The new manager has really started turning this great pub into what it should be. Great food, great beer, great team, great atmosphere. I will return soon.
