Redhouse opens early on match days so groups can meet up before heading to the game, and it’s on the Quayside in the city centre. It specialises in hearty pie-and-mash—ideal pre-match fuel—and offers cask ales plus rotating craft lines, including local and regional beers. These make it a practical rendezvous for supporters looking for food and a pint before the walk to St James’ Park. Newcastle pubs are generally welcoming to visiting supporters, so it works as a neutral meet-up rather than a home-only spot.
A really interesting building. Lots of nooks and crannies and exposed historic features in the building. The pies were ok. The mash and peas had been kept warm for a while. It was served up pretty fast. As well as the traditional meat pies they have veggie, vegan and ‘special’ pies. The service was ok. The bar staff were pretty friendly, but lacked a bit of warmth when serving the food.
If you find yourself near the quayside, craving a classic pie and mash, look no further than this pub. The food is excellent, the atmosphere lively, and the unconventional layout with numerous small rooms adds to the experience. Plus, it's conveniently connected to the neighboring bars, keeping you dry in case of rain.
Steak and Brown Ale Pie, Cheddar Mash and Peas with a Peppercorn sauce and a pint before the match, outstanding. Just what was needed on a cold february saturday. Probably the best i've had. Will definitely return.
Went on a Monday around 2pm, the pub is in a fabulous location, it's obviously extremely old but immaculately clean. Great decor and staff were super helpful and friendly but natural not annoyingly in your face. We tried the legendary pies and all I can say is WOW, absolutely delicious. I had mince and onion with cheesy mash and minted peas and my partner had steak and ale with the same sides. It was flawless, easily the best pie I've ever had. The mash gravy and peas were perfect, the portions large and very recently priced. It was so nice we kept eating well after we were full and ended up writing off the rest of the day because our greedy selves were waddling around uncomfortable and far too full. I strongly recommend if you decide to try it- eat AFTER you've done everything else you need to do for the day because this was the first time in my life I had a hangover from a pie, in a good way, but still! I will definitely go back for more pie induced coma action because it was totally worth it.
This may just be my new favourite place in Newcastle! Great atmosphere, good selection of drinks. Food (especially the chicken, leek and ham pie) is out of this world!
