I only booked for one night to break our journey to North Wales from London, so my expectations were not that high, I just wanted a bed for the night. The location was within walking distance from Shrewsbury station, down a small alley off the main shopping street. I didn't realise it would get quite noisy, and there was actually a band playing in the pub the night of our stay - our room was directly above it! So we went to bed late! For some this could've been a disaster, but saw the funny side and at least the band were playing songs I liked, and I travelled with ear plugs so did manage to get to sleep. The room was well equipped, comfortable & clean besides this.I had booked breakfast but due to not realising what time it would start from and having to be on an early train, actually couldn't stay for it. To compensate the lady who checked us in kindly offered to make us lunch instead, so we had some sandwiches, nuts, crisps and snacks from the bar to take with us, which I appreciated, as I was travelling with my young son.
I stayed at the Bull Inn for one night. Located in the historical centre of Shrewsbury, there are plenty of shops and pubs around. The room was comfortable and spacious. There was a desk for my laptop. The room doesn't have windows to the outside but this was not an issue. It is located above the pub and was noisy until fairly late but the staff let me know and I had earplugs so it was not a problem. Some bits of decoration need redoing but it's minor. The TV is fairly ancient and could be replaced with a smart one. The breakfast was great. I would happily return.
My family and friends came to the bull this weekend to enjoy some of the music as part of loop fest. We were having a nice time until a particularly poor experience at the bar, marred it for us. My mother and sister had gone to the bar to order some drinks. A group of young lads thought they were above everyone else in the pub and tried to skip the queue, shoving their way through the crowd. This led to my mother being shoved through the queue towards the bar. It was at this point that a male member of staff suggested that my mum and sister had pushed in. Understandably, he hadn't seen the incident which led to this so you could see where he was coming from initially. However, when another lady tried to explain to the member of staff what had happened the staff member failed to acknowledge any of it, and turned around to the other members of staff and said that neither my mother or sister, or this other poor lady should be served and that they should "wait all day if they had to". Unsurprisingly at this point we all left to find somewhere with better service, and where bullying your way to the front of the queue wasn't standard place. My family and friends have used this pub for years. Sadly after how this situation was managed. we won't be back and will be sharing this story with others. We understand that misunderstandings can happen, particularly when it's busy. But for a member of staff to carry on along the same narrative, impervious to the truth of the situation presented by the other lady with such arrogance, and dare I say passive aggressiveness was laughably poor.
Good: Comfortable mattress, hot shower, decent breakfast, friendly and helpful staff. Not so good: Very thin curtains and bright neon lights right outside so room does not get very dark when lights are off. Quite noisy - audible thumping music from somewhere until after 1 am and it wasnβt even the weekend. Also lots of shouting in street outside (I do appreciate this is not innβs fault, but prospective guests should be aware). Good for price but bring your own eye mask and earplugs if you like dark and quiet for sleeping!
VERY disappointed on Saturday whilst celebrating with friends for a birthday when one of tge ladies said her drink (half a pint of lager) had a funny taste to it - whether it was the drink or the glass - but was told by the landlady that she would not change it. So my friend said she couldn't drink it and gave it back. Safe to say we did not buy another round. Never come across this unprofessional and ungracious behaviour in all my years going to pubs. NOT the right behaviour!
