About this Pub

The Old Wellington

Why it's great for Matchdays

In Shambles Square in the city centre, The Old Wellington is a convenient pre-match meeting point close to Manchester Cathedral, the Arena and transport hubs. The pub explicitly promotes live sport on TV (and lists Sky Sports/TNT for rugby), making it a reliable place to watch early kick-offs or post-match highlights. Shambles Square is a recognised fan spot, with home supporters (e.g., Manchester City fans) gathering there, and away-day guides pointing visiting fans to the square—so matchdays typically see a mixed crowd. All of this makes it a practical, central choice for both sets of supporters before or after games.

The Old Wellington in Manchester is a historic gem, dating back to the 1800s with classic Victorian architecture that gives the place a lot of character. The interior keeps that old-school pub charm while still feeling welcoming, and the outdoor seating is perfect for a sunny day. I spent a couple of hours here with some buddies, sampling pints from their cask selection, playing cards and chatting with locals. The beer was excellent- well-poured, flavorful, and reasonably priced. Each round we tried something new from the cask selection, which was a fun way to explore different brews. While we didn’t have food, the atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting. It’s lively but relaxed, with a great mix of regulars and visitors. The staff were friendly and attentive, making it easy to enjoy the time without feeling rushed. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or just looking for a historic Manchester pub with a fun vibe, The Old Wellington is a solid spot. I’d absolutely come back to hang out, enjoy some cask ales, and soak in the history of the place. Highly recommended for a laid-back afternoon or evening pint.

With family visiting from Australia, who wanted to experience a typical English pub lunch, we chose to eat here on Boxing Day. We certainly were not disappointed…. the atmosphere was wonderful, and the food excellent…the staff friendly and helpful,in many ways. I would return happily.

Really liked The Old Wellington in Manchester. Full of character and history, with a proper traditional pub atmosphere that’s hard to find nowadays. Good selection of beers, friendly staff, and the food was surprisingly very good as well. Great spot to stop for a drink and soak up the atmosphere in the city centre.

Called in yesterday for some food — it was busy but we managed to get a table. The food was incredible; you don’t find proper pub grub like that very often anymore. The staff were friendly and welcoming too. We’ll definitely be back.

What a fabulous building, hard to believe it’s been moved from its original location. I don’t think you will find such an atmospheric environment to enjoy a pint. Head to the top floor where there is a lovely vaulted ceiling.. service from a QR ordering system is swift even at peak service times. Take the time to read up on the history while you are there.
