Greene King’s official pages say The Rovers Tye shows live sport on big screens with Sky Sports and TNT Sports and promotes an “ultimate match-day atmosphere,” including dedicated live-football listings. They also offer Live Sport table bookings so groups can secure a good view. The pub’s menu confirms hot meals are served, which is handy before or after watching a televised match. Located in Colchester (CO4 9BA), it’s a practical spot to catch games on TV when you’re not at the stadium or when kick-off times clash.
I couldn't recommend enough if I am honest. The food was amazing and staff members were absolutely fantastic, especially Abbie who served us. I have autistic children and she went above and beyond to make their experience easier and positive. She was lovely to talk to and made things so much more comfortable for a SEN parent. We can't wait to go back there 😀
Lovely place with great food and staff The Rovers Tye in Colchester is a really lovely place. The building itself has loads of character and a nice, welcoming feel as soon as you walk in. The food was really good, well cooked, and nicely presented, and you can tell care goes into it. Everything we had was spot on. The staff were brilliant too — friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome without being over the top. It’s just a nice place to relax and enjoy a meal, whether you’re popping in for food or a drink. Great atmosphere, great service, and a lovely setting. Would definitely recommend, we are always coming back
First time visit. Came in, place was kind of open with not too many people. No one said anything. Thinking we just take a seat we found one in a not too loud area away from kids. Then a lady greeted us with "You got a reservation?"... A hi would have been a nice start. We didn't so she said you can get a two seat table over there, gestering with her hand. We went one way she yelled not that way the other way. We picked a two seat chair, and she yelled not that one that one! Which was in the back next to a bunch of people and a lot of small kids. We wanted a nice quiet romantic evening, we felt like we were getting told off and unwanted and we left. Will not be coming back.
Used to be a go-to, but the new menu has pushed me away Rovers Tye was always a favourite for a reason — the food was genuinely good and the value was exceptional. But since the menu change, it’s hard not to feel a bit let down. The wings used to be a steal at £8.59 for 16 — now you’re paying £6.29 for just 6. That’s a completely different price-per-wing, and it shows. What was great value feels like a premium price for a much smaller portion. Worse still, they’ve removed two of the best things on the menu: the low and slow cooked beef rib (which was absolutely outstanding) and the sharer plate at £24.99 that genuinely offered fantastic value for groups. Those two alone were reason enough to visit regularly. I understand costs go up and menus evolve, but this feels like a step backwards for loyal customers. Hopefully they reconsider bringing back some of those crowd favourites. Until then, it’s harder to justify the trip.
We visited yesterday and overall had a pleasant experience. The staff were lovely, very cheerful, and really helpful, which made us feel very welcome. The prices were also reasonable. Food-wise, my husband had the Philly steak burger which he said was lovely, my daughter had a hamburger which she enjoyed, and I ordered the steak. While the meals were nice, we did feel the food could have used a little more seasoning. The peas and corn were quite plain and would have benefited from a bit of butter or seasoning, and the chips were slightly undercooked. My steak was cooked unde to my liking and still bleeding when it arrived and wasn't rested. My daughter's dessert was fantastic. She really enjoyed it. It was a strawberry and brownies. Stick with chocolate dipping sauce. The decor looked slightly worn in places, and unfortunately our table was quite wobbly. When my daughter sat down it knocked the table and caused my husband’s coffee, and my cup of tea to spill. That said, the staff were genuinely great and very friendly, so with a few small improvements to the food seasoning and seating, it could easily be an even better experience.
