📍 2.6 miles from Abbey Stadium
The Free Press is a historic pub located near Cambridge's city centre, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It serves a variety of locally sourced, seasonal British dishes, including popular items like Scotch eggs and Sunday roasts. The pub boasts an extensive selection of award-winning ales and guest beers from local breweries such as Buntingford and Milton, as well as from Greene King's seasonal and guest lists, including Jarl from Fyne Ales. Its proximity to the city centre makes it a convenient stop for both home and away fans attending matches at the nearby Abbey Stadium. The pub's cozy interior, complete with a traditional snug and open fires in winter, adds to its charm, while the outdoor courtyard garden provides a pleasant setting during warmer months.
Lovely little pub in a quiet neighborhood outside of the hustle of the main downtown University touristy area. Food was excellent and the staff were great. We sat in the front patio area and got to make so many new dog friends while we were there. They had a nice selection of cask ales which was a nice treat for an American beer lover since it's a dying thing back home in the US.
Great little pub with friendly people, great drinks, and great food. I was lucky enough to visit during a cider tap takeover and a neighborhood outdoor event, and the selection was fantastic. I also had their Scotch egg, which was one of the best I’ve ever had, and their cheesy chips, which were an excellent value. It’s a great, quiet neighborhood pub that’s well worth a visit. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Cambridge.
Fantastic little pub, cosy and warm, two fires going. Dropped in at just past 2pm, kitchen just closed but were nice enough to do the njuda scotch egg and it was so good! A great spot on a chilly winters day.
This pub is delicious!! Decent scotch egg. Jammy yolk (though not runny), crunchy shell, balanced spice, and not-greasy pork. The salad is great. “Steak is special, but the risotto will always be there”— that’s why I never get to the classic menu in restaurants haha. Perfectly cooked, lean but tender and juicy. (To be honest I didn’t expect much for a pub but this was a good surprise.) The salad sauce is citrusy and refreshing. It soaked the steak as well so I really didn’t need the satay sauce :3 the chips are dangerously crispy, unlike those in many other British restaurants. The white sauce for the scallops is delightful, light with a hint of lemon. The scallops are on the slightly undercooked side. I like raw food, but maybe frying it a little longer would work better with the sauce. The mushrooms are lovely. The staff are friendly, and the young lady at the bar gives god recommendations. Looking forward to coming back for the regular menu (and specials). (Rarebit and anchovies, Jerusalem artichoke risottos, blood orange scallops… all sound nice too!
First time at the free press and purely by chance as we had been let down elsewhere. Delighted to say that the welcome was warm and friendly, the choice of beers was excellent and the Ham egg and chips was superb- even during a busy Sunday lunch service. A thoroughly deserved good review, I will definitely be coming back. Very well done everyone.
