About this Pub

Griffin’s Head

Why it's great for Matchdays

Handy for a pre- or post-match bite: the pub serves food daily with clearly advertised kitchen hours, and it pours cask ales including Thwaites Gold/Amber. It's also reachable by public transport on matchdays — CAMRA notes it's close to bus routes and about 900m from Huncoat railway station — which can make it a practical stop if you're coming through Huncoat before heading on to Accrington. No firm evidence of sports TV, so consider it more of a sit-down meal and pint option rather than a place to watch the game.

Great pub with a really welcoming atmosphere. The food was excellent - generous portions, well cooked and full of flavour. The staff were friendly, attentive and made us feel looked after throughout the visit. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of both the food and service. Definitely good value for money and somewhere i’d happily visit again. Highly recommended!

Had seen BeardMeetsFood on his You Tube channel take on the Mixed Grill challenge at this pub and decided to pay a visit for lunch. Car park to the side. Small step into the pub but a small metal ramp had been added which should allow access for anyone using a wheelchair although a couple of inner doors might prove a bit of an issue without a bit of assistance. Once inside though could see no significant problems for anyone with restricted mobility. We were warmly greeted on entry. When we said we were there to get something to eat we were asked to pick a table and our server would be over to take our order. Menus were supplied and the specials menu on the wall pointed out to us. Quite impressed with the variety of dishes available. I went for the 10 oz sirloin steak and my brother choose the beef stroganoff from the specials menu. Also ordered some extra onion rings. For drinks I went with a bottle of Malbec and my brother a pint of lemonade. I liked the wine list. Not a massive choice but a nice range with 4 reds and 4 whites and then some rose and sparkling. Very competitively priced as well. The Malbec was £15.95 and a really nice red. Just a note though. It’s on the menu as a wine from Chile. It’s Argentinian. But ignore me being pedantic. It was a lovely wine and affordable. So many places today charging £25 plus for a bottle of wine and close on £10 for a 250ml measure. It’s nice to enjoy a nice wine with a meal without feeling you are being overcharged. Overall I think the prices were very reasonable apart from one item. When we got our bill at the end the lemonade had been missed off. We raised this and it was added. Have to say we thought £3.00 for a lemonade was a little expensive especially when everything else was really competitive price wise. Being totally honest I was a little disappointed with the presentation of my meal. I think a bigger plate might have helped. The plate should also have been warmed. Mine was cold so my steak was already cooling as I worked my way through it. It was also over seasoned for me. I like salt and love black pepper but there was too much on my steak. It didn’t impact on the flavour but rather the texture. It felt a little gritty as I chewed it. Despite that it was a good sized piece of steak and a decent thickness. The chips were fresh and tasty. So nice not to be served frozen chips. Same with the onion rings. A couple were a little under done for me but overall very crispy and tasty. You got half a mushroom. But it was huge and more than enough. It had a strong and distinctive taste to it which I liked. Our server was friendly, attentive and polite. Came over several times to ask if everything was alright. Even asked if it was ok to open a window before doing so. No room for dessert although I noticed they do a cheese board so might be an option when we visit again because I would certainly give this place another try. It’s really nice to see smaller, independent places like this offering something a bit different. And to be welcomed as a customer and not just a tick on a spreadsheet back at corporate HQ. So many places now are run by the big breweries and are clones of each other. We will end up with nothing but Mcpubs offering the same sort of food straight from the freezer into the micro wave if places like this don’t get the publics support. Hopefully, they will get the custom which will allow them to thrive and continue to offer something a little different if not unique. Which brings me back to the Mixed Grill challenge. Whilst we were there a customer did turn up to try it. The pictures don’t do it justice or illustrate just how big the portion is. It’s a monstrous amount of food and I wouldn’t even think of attempting it. I hope he was successful in his attempt and, if not, he enjoyed taking on the challenge. But for those with big appetites and / or a competitive streak it could be worth it because for £40 you get a massive quantity of food. And you never know should you beat the challenge your picture will end up on the wall of fame next to the Beard.

This is the first time we have been since the new owners have been in place . Must say I read alot of reviews and also posts on the Facebook page . Can honestly say that this is the first time in a long time that we have been made to feel so welcome in a local pub . The atmosphere was lovely , friendly ,attentive ,knowledgeable staff who are extremely proud of their establishment and the service they are providing . Extensive range of drinks ciders wines etc . As for the food , Varied menu , fresh cooked food excellent service , quality ingredients . Would rival any gastro pub . Definitely will be back ! Dog friendly ! Good to see a local establishment attempting to be the hub of the community and encouraging get togethers, from quizzes, walks , bingo etc . Well done team Griffin’s Head Will Definitely be back Thanks for a lovely meal , excellent service and a lovely atmosphere .
