Friendly old-fashioned pub with lots of real ale choice. Very handy for the football ground and welcomes away fans. Opens earlier than 'Google opening times' shows when Stockport are at home.

Finally my first visit last night, made to feel very welcome & I enjoyed speaking to the bar man & other customers. Will be in again. Its great that there are still traditional pubs still around that set a standard of behavior. Thank you.

Not sure where to start... There are so many baffling things going on here. We walked in and immediately noticed the decor - where are the bare concrete walls and exposed ceiling ventilation ducts that we like to see in a traditional British bar? Nowhere to be seen. The lack of heating ducts in the ceiling meant they'd had to bash a hole in the wall and fill it with burning rocks just to keep the place warm. And that's only the start of the crazy. Next we headed to the bar. Instead of the expected range of 20 subtle variations on the same delightfully gassy grapefruit flavoured NEIPA, we saw hand operated pumps (yes you heard right, hand operated - almost like electricity hadn't been invented) dispensing all kinds of weirdly flavoured "bitters" and "stouts". We were quite disturbed to discover that each one we tried very much failed to taste almost exactly like all the others. What's that all about? Then the music. Not only was it music from the 1980s - annoyingly chock full of "melodies" and "lyrics" - but it was played at such a low volume that we couldn't concentrate on looking at our phones because people (complete strangers, no less!) kept trying to talk to us - no doubt in an attempt to fill the horrible silent void created by the lack of banging tunes. All in all it was such a surreal experience that we had to stay there for several hours/drinks to convince ourselves that this was really happening. I still can't quite believe it - I may have to go back again to make sure I didn't just hallucinate the whole thing. If this is a traditional British pub then really, I don't know what the world's coming to. EDIT: Added stars in response to threat of S-Club next time we're in.

If only all pubs were like this. Friendly from the moment we walked in, got friendlier the longer we stayed. The beer is all excellent, the rest of the customers very good fun and the building is so full of character, it could be a theatre production. I noted some sniffy reviews about decor etc - if you like soulless vacuums, this place is not for you. Go and get a fosters in Argos or something. Thanks to all the staff for looking after us and being so generous. Love it xxx
