📍 0.7 miles from St James Park
The Farmers Union is a popular pre-match venue for both home and away fans due to its proximity to Exeter's St James Park, just a short walk from Exeter Central Train Station. It is listed as an away fan-friendly pub in official guides, including those from Chesterfield FC and Exeter City FC, making it a welcoming spot for visiting supporters. The pub offers a variety of food options, including a Sunday carvery, and serves a selection of local ales such as Otter Bitter, Yellow Hammer, and Atlantic. With its central location and accommodating atmosphere, it provides a comfortable setting for fans to enjoy before and after the match.
Me and my friends stayed the night and we couldn’t have been more grateful towards the staff. So friendly and helpful helping us celebrate ! The rooms are to be expected with what you pay. Nice little pub with good entertainment. Would absolutely stay again. Can’t thank them enough !
We stayed at farmers union with our one year old whilst visiting family in Exeter due to it being conveniently located next to the train station. We stayed for two nights over the weekend, checking in early evening on the Friday. Check in was quick and friendly, the manager helped us with our bags and baby gear. There was a travel cot already set up when we got to the room. The room was perfect as a base, it was clean, modern, airy and had everything you need. Even though it was a busy weekend, there was minimal noise coming from the pub. The breakfast in the morning was very reasonably priced and the chef catered very well for our daughters allergy. Overall we were really happy with the stay and will definitely be booking again for our next Devon visit.
Pros first. 1. Staff are mostly brilliant. We generally receive a very warm, kind welcoming experience and great service when we come here. 2. We have not sampled the main menu but have had the carvery a few times and it has been great, with the chef going the extra mile in terms of service. 3. It is generally quite accessible. Although one entrance has a flight of steps, the other one at the back is wheelchair friendly and there is enough room between tables. It also has a disabled toilet. 4. It puts on regular entertainment, including live music and karaoke. 5. It's in a great location, by the cloctower at the bottom of Queen Street, very handy for Central Station. Now cons: 1. Toilets. They have positioned a table right next to the disabled toilet, which can mean having to ask people to move on a busy night when going in and out of it, which is discomforting. The other standard toilets are downstairs and the Gents is pretty grim and in dire need of a revamp. Peeling paintwork, buckets under the urinals and a near constant unpleasant smell are not welcoming. You don't expect a lot from loos in a city centre pub but you certainly hope for better than this one. 2. Despite the very high local student population, drinks are a bit pricy, although they do occasionally have drinks promotions. They offer accommodation but I have no idea what it is like as we have only ever visited it as a pub.
Always a positive experience lovely friendly helpful barman and chef does me fried bread if he's not too busy. They try to accommodate as much as possible.
Went in for a Sunday carvery wish I didn’t bother gammon was cold the lamb didn’t taste of lamb the roast potatoes were dry and hard like cooked a few days before then reheated, carrots tasted funny, Yorkshire puds were Lidls cheap and nasty, mint sauce was just water, you get given a tiny amount of cauliflower cheese, definitely not worth the £14, asked for a refund and the man was rude. Save yourself the hassle go somewhere else
