We as a family go to the Shovels often as we can take the dog. Today it was our dogs birthday and we thought we woukd get together to celebrate. They table was dressed ready for a dogs birthday. A lovely personal touch. There is never an issue when we take the dog they are all really friendly. All the staff were great and thank you to James for the lovely touch with the table decorations.
Worst experience I have ever had in a pub. I have written over 100 reviews and this is easily the worst place I have visited. I came here with my wife and two children and within minutes realised we had made a mistake. At the next table were three men clearly worse for wear who appeared to have just come from a horse fair. They repeatedly used racist language whilst discussing a singer, loudly and in full earshot of my children. They seemed to be regulars as they were on first name terms with staff, to be fair the racist remarks were outside the ear shot of the staff whom I'm sure would have challenged Thier behaviour. The food was dreadful. One of my sons could not eat his burger because it “tasted terrible” and the chicken nuggets tasted like reheated leftovers. I also had an issue with one of the machines. When I asked a member of staff for help she was dismissive and could not have been less interested. To top it off the place felt more like a dog kennel than a pub. There were mutts everywhere. One person had two enormous lurcher type dogs by the bar that were blocking access and making it difficult for people to get served. An unpleasant atmosphere, terrible food and poor service. Needless to say neither I nor my family will ever return to this establishment again
Had an amazing pre birthday meal tonight for my partner. Lovely atmosphere. Very pleasant staff, fab service and excellent meal. Not too busy so very pleasant. Was getting busier as we were leaving. Will be back again for sure thankyou.
We stopped for lunch today. Very dog friendly and the food was lovely. Hubby had a mixed grill, there was plenty of food and the steak was actually as requested. Staff are very helpful. Excellent and inexpensive. 😊 April 2026 Update: we went again this month and the standard was exactly the same, so they must be consistent in their service. Oh and hubby had another mixed grill 😂
My family and friends had the most amazing day here for Christmas in the Shovels. All the staff were polite, professional and bent over backwards to make our day one to remember. Food was 10/10 and we were stuffed by the end. The cute little elf Steve looked after us from booking to leaving and everything in between. Thank you, Karen and team for a wonderful day!
