Part medieval apothecary, part beer lover’s paradise! The bottle shop downstairs is stocked with an incredible selection of craft beers, ciders, and spirits from around the world. Whether you're after a rare Belgian ale, a bold IPA, or something completely new, they’ve got you covered. Upstairs, the quirky tavern feels like stepping into a Viking mead hall with its rustic charm, taxidermy, and candlelit tables. Perfect for sipping on a unique brew or enjoying their delicious food. The staff are always happy to recommend something exciting. If you love great beer, history, or just a fantastic pub experience. Cheers!

Trembling Madness is one of our favourite spot for crazy beers. They always have such nice beers variety on offer on tap as well as cans and bottles. Such cool & cosy atmosphere inside. Upstairs building has different kinda ceilings like historical stuff. I heard the beams are from old Viking ships. Quirky and cozy seating area. The shop downstairs has large layout of beers variety you can ever see which you could take upstairs to buy and drink if you’d like. Limited but delicious food specially cheese boards that are great we friends shared. Happily recommend

As you walk in through the door you are met by a beer loves dream...wall to wall beer, bottles cans & everything else. I've never seen such a huge collection of beers for sale in one place, absolutely amazing . But go up the stairs to the pub & it's just as crazy. Great atmosphere but on the small side so you might not get a seat. We were perched on the wooden seat at the top of the stairs with a lovely dog sitting (sleeping )on its owners knee to our left. I had a Verdant Sun pale ale & it was really good. A lot of people climbed them stairs while drinking it only to turn around & go back down as it was busy. I think if you have enough beer them stairs could be the end of you. Definitely a place to visit while in York

Hidden above a funky drinks store lies this cosy, atmospheric spot which channels the authentic pub vibe. Great service inside, cool interior, well worth a trip! Offers food which looks good too. Many thanks to the server who just graduated!

Outstanding old pub with taxidermy, and other creepy decor. It is quite cramped, so be prepared to sit with strangers. But it is well. Worth it: the steak pie with mushy peas everyone raves about bears up well under the gourmand’s scrutiny. Their cask ales are also quite nice. The toilets are two floors down, and a tall person may find themselves recalling their days of playing twister as the ceilings are of varying heights, and the corridor is a bit narrow if you are a tall, side to side. By far in the best pub I visited in York. They have another location closer to the rail station with the same ales but less taxidermy.

House of Trembling Madness is a proper hidden gem in York! From the outside, it looks like just an off licence, but head upstairs, and you’ll find a quirky little pub full of character. We stopped in for a few beers, and the selection was incredible everything from German and Belgian brews to Irish classics. The downstairs shop is a beer lover’s paradise, and upstairs, you can enjoy the same great selection in a cozy, medieval style setting. If you’re into your beers, this place is a must visit. Definitely recommend!

A true local legend of a venue. Friendly and knowledgeable staff (I was by myself and could not have been made more welcome) and stunning venue. Don’t be put off by the shop front - carry on through and up the stairs. It’s a must visit for me.
