I'd enjoyed good food and hospitality at this pub on previous day trips to York, and this visit was certainly no different! Conveniently located just inside the city walls, between Bootham Bar and the Minster, it's an atmospheric old place with wooden beams, exposed brick walls, cosy lounges, and an intriguing mystery surrounding the discovery, in 1816, of a dungeon and a passage that was hurriedly bricked up after ghostly footsteps were heard there. It's claimed you can occasionally still hear them! Because of the pub's location on a busy and narrow street, there is no outside seating. I found a nice table in the larger lounge at the back, with its quirky modern decor and a choice of seating options. The bar staff were welcoming and friendly, and although the pub filled up very quickly, service was surprisingly quick. Great choice of cask ales, and an extensive gin list on the table, but I opted for a good Merlot. The large menu included grills, burgers, jacket potatoes, a house salad, and traditional main courses. I chose the special: a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with mashed potato, carrots, broccoli, and three slices of roast beef (you can have sausages as an alternative), with a pot of horseradish sauce and rich gravy. The meal was piping hot, well cooked, and very filling. Didn't have room for any of the tempting desserts on offer! Prices were very reasonable. The ambience was lively and friendly. Overall, an ideal place to stop for lunch when sightseeing in York.

I have been here on a few occasions and it has always been fantastic. The food is amazing, the staff are all so polite and very friendly and there is a great atmosphere. I was chatting to Alfie on the bar today who served us and he is such a nice guy, a credit to the place. I had the beef lasagne and my boyfriend has a sunday roast chicken dinner, all home cooked food......delicious. Thankyou so much for the lovely food, I highly recommend this to anyone. We will see you again soon.

One of the best pub experiences I’ve ever had. There are many draft beer options, which is quite important. I had chicken wings, mac and cheese, and onion rings β€” all of them were delicious. And of course, you should definitely try the Yorkshire pudding.

I had traveled to York for the day, while staying in Scarborough, to meet up with a friend from the US. She was exploring the city, as it was her very first time in England. We spent the day walking the walls and taking in the sights and sounds this ancient city had to offer. Later that day, after building up an appetite, we decided to look for somewhere to quench our thirst and enjoy a bite to eat. The Hole in The Wall came up as a good option and so, decided to give it a try. As you walk inside, I got that archaic and cosy vibe about the place, with plenty of seating available. I loved seeing the bits of information dotted around, about the history of the pub (great for those into history!) Ordering food and drinks was super simple, via the QR Code on the table. Also noticed a NGCI (Non-Gluten Containing Ingredients) menu, which is great for those who have to adhere to a strict diet. I did have to go to the bar to order my drink, as shandy was not on the menu. But that was not an issue at all for me, as it gave me a chance to stretch my legs and take in more of the pub. The bearded chap at the bar was super pleasant and very friendly, great customer service. After a bit, our food came out and I must say, it was a pretty good steak and ale pie. It had a great taste and was nice and hot! The chips were lovely and crispy on the outside, and fluffy within. There was plenty of gravy in the jug too! Although there was music playing, it wasn't that loud that we couldn't hear ourselves talking. The chap who served me at the bar, asked if both our meals were alright, which was nice and also bid us farewell as we were leaving too. It's little things like this, that make you want to return. I'd definitely come back here again, great atmosphere and a great place to grab a drink and a bit to eat while in the ancient city of York.

Happy with our meal. The cheddar, leek, and potato pie was flavorful and hot. The chips crispy and fresh, the fish cooked to perfection. Just wish we could’ve tried their Yorkshire pudding and sticky toffee pudding, both of which were sold out.

There are a lot of pubs in York but once we tried Hole in the Wall, we decided to go to the same place 2 nights in a row. We ate chicken burger and american hot dog, drank wine and ale, they were all delicious (especially chicken burger!). Also atmosphere was a classic English pub with nice live music (a man was singing with his guitar, it was not very loud and disturbing kind of music, we love it, he was really good!). Definitely recommended.

The Hole in the Wall is a nice cosy traditional pub with a real fire and a contemporary feel. There is a good selection of draught beers, including four hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones i tried were in excellent condition. I haven't tried the food, but the menu looked very tempting.
