📍 0.8 miles from Vicarage Road
Matchdays are easy here: the pub publicly lists upcoming fixtures and shows live football on Sky Sports/TNT, so you can catch early/late kick-offs around the game. It’s in central Watford on Estcourt Road and is marked as close to Watford Junction (approx. 650m) and other transport, making it a straightforward walk or hop to/from Vicarage Road. There’s cask ale (Sharp’s Doom Bar) plus mainstream beers, and the venue states it serves food (bar snacks and traditional Sunday roasts), handy for pre- or post-match. Overall, it’s a practical town-centre base with live sport on TV, beer choice, and food options within easy reach of the stadium and stations.
I had a great experience at the Golden Lion. The atmosphere felt warm and relaxed from the moment I walked in, and it’s exactly the kind of pub where you can unwind without any rush. The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which always makes a big difference. I really enjoyed the food — everything came out fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavour. My meal was served quickly, and the portion sizes were generous. The outdoor seating area was also a big plus, perfect for a casual drink or lunch in a comfortable setting. Overall, it’s a solid pub with great service, good food, and a cosy vibe. I’d happily come back again.
Great atmosphere. A truly local friendly pub. Warm welcome from John.
I love traditional pubs but sadly Watford centre is lacking, so sought this place out. Very attractive exterior, a modern single room interior, with a lovely outdoor space. Great selection of drinks but only one of the three real ales (Bombardier) was available at the time of my visit (mid-Saturday afternoon). Also a little too much bad language for my liking, not helped by the landlord’s contribution! A friendly welcome from the landlady and a pleasant enough experience, but could be better.
A beautiful pub with a very nice outdoor area. Games being televised, board games are available, great prices, the kitchen had already closed when I went.
Stopped for a quick pre theatre drink. Lovely large pub, funny and friendly staff, great selection of drinks and beautiful interior.
