📍 0.9 miles from Fratton Park
Recommended on an away-fans forum as a pre-match option around a 15-minute walk from Fratton Park, The Phoenix offers practical matchday appeal. It shows TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport), so you can catch early/late kick-offs, and it has Sports TV listed by CAMRA. Regular cask options like Gales HSB and Timothy Taylor Landlord make it a solid pint stop. The public bar is decorated with Portsmouth FC memorabilia, signalling a local Pompey vibe, but being a little further from the ground and included in away-fan suggestions points to a mixed crowd on matchdays.
I was impressed with the memorabilia on the walls, but the garden blew me away. I've never seen so many plants in a beer garden. There's also a snug, so a nice place to escape. Good ales on tap, with no problem to try before you buy. Service is hit and miss, though. Some of the servers are pleasant, others aren't. Can get busy of a weekend
Well that was totally unexpected. What a great pub, with great beers, and an eclectic clientele. I loved my first ever visit here, and I'm sure it won't be the last. It has been described as quirky, and whilst that has some truth, there's much more to this place than that. The landlord was so friendly he gave me free cans of beer that he'd struggled to sell, but that I love and engaged in lively discussions on the joy of good beer. A fantastic place to spend time at. BTW, rating first for food is for amazing scratchings, but also for the guest beer.
What a great pub, I've walked past it so many times and I finally went in and bought a drink yesterday (well three actually). 😁 Its interior is classic 'British Pub' with lots of quirky items and memorabilia. They serve an excellent pint of Timothy Tailor Landlor. I'll be back again soon.
Really like it in here. All sorts of people traditional pub with so much theatre history its lovely and so interesting the decor is awesome. The garden is lovely the staff are great. Worth a visit
My favourite place for a drink in Portsmouth. Down to earth feel about it, unique experience each time I go. I feel this is one of the last remaining pubs with a great atmosphere that doesn’t require slot machines or excessive amounts of sport screens. You feel greeted by the owners/staff and they treat you well, even if you’re not a weekly local. Loved coming here with family or good friends, especially liked what they did to light up the garden with a luminous glow of fairy lights and nature, to accompany the ubiquitous British pub.
