The Rising Sun

📍 0.4 miles from Ashton Gate Stadium

About this Pub

The Rising Sun
A classic pre-match spot between Ashton Gate and Greville Smyth Park, The Rising Sun shows live football (Premier League, EFL and Champions League) with multiple big screens, creating a strong matchday atmosphere. CAMRA notes it’s popular with sports fans due to proximity to Ashton Gate, and local coverage highlights around a dozen TV screens, making it easy to catch the action from almost anywhere inside or in the garden. It’s part of Craft Union, whose page for this venue actively promotes live fixtures and caters to both home and away supporters. Handy opening hours and the short walk to the stadium make it a convenient meet-up before or after games.

I visited on the first hot & sunny day of 2026, looking for the nearest Pub to the SC Expo at Ashton Gate stadium, to gather my thoughts and rewrite my notes. It was nice & quiet, and although clearly catering primarily to sports fans, there was no sound coming off the many TVs, and ambient music was at a low enough volume to easily talk over. Spacious throughout, with a large bar at the front, a smaller back room, and a big Beer garden with its own outdoor bar. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere. ________________________ Personal sporting affliction: I don't follow any clubs, but I have done a lot of security work at Bath Rugby, so my loyalties lay there if only because they pay me.

Having just moved to the area, and after walking our dogs on an unseasonably warm day, thought we'd pop in for a quick drink. Dogs aren't allowed apparently, which is fine, it's your perogative, but the rude and loud manner that we were told this by the girl behind the bar, made other customers turn around and stare at us like we'd just put a baby on a spike! Close enough to be our local, but we'll not be going back.

Absolutely disgusting. My friend and her daughter who is disabled and none verbal and a wheelchair user, which should not be relevant at all. The daughter is 25 yes old but was only drinking a J20 was asked to leave for no apparent reasons . When questioned why was told just to leave as her daughter didn’t have ID when pointed out she was drinking just J20 which is not alcoholic they were told to leave. Kind and caring people they are not. How dare they treat people this way and they need educated on human dignity and kindness.
