Why is The White Star Tavern, Southampton good for fans?
On matchdays, White Star Tavern works well as a neutral pre-/post-game base: it shows live football (e.g., listed fixtures on its own events page) and serves food all day, so you can eat before or after the game. It sits on Oxford Street in the city centre, and away-fan guides report using it, with an estimated 15–20 minute walk to St Mary’s Stadium from the area—handy if you want to stroll to the ground with time to spare.

We were taking a British Isle cruise out of Southampton and needed a place to stay for a couple of nights as we were wanting to see the city before we left. Chose this place mainly due to it's location. We arrived at around 14:00 but they don't start check-in until 15:00. It wasn't a problem as they put our luggage in their storage room while we ate lunch in the tavern. Our room was very comfortable and located lower in the tavern which was nice since there are no lifts. We kept our large pieces of luggage in the storage room and only took up what we needed. We took advantage of the included breakfast and all the food we ate while there was very good. Located within walking distance of the major sites we wanted to see and there are also lots of pubs and restaurants located right there on Oxford Street. They will arrange for a taxi to cruise terminals if needed but if you are leaving from the Ocean Terminal it is only about a 5 minute walk through the park to get there. Staff was really helpful and friendly. We loved the history of the tavern and would highly recommend staying there. Only thing of concern would be if you are a light sleeper. While it didn't bother us, it stays quite noisy on Oxford Street until the the pubs close.

We stayed for one night prior to our cruise and we will definitely return. We have stayed in a few Southampton hotels but this is definitely our new place to stay. Beautifully decorated rooms with all the amenities you could need for your stay. Lovely selection of tea and coffee and separate coffee machine in the room. There are a lot of stairs but if you have a high floor this is not a problem with staff to assist you with your suitcases. We had a wonderful dinner from the evening menu with delicious wine. The breakfast was amazing in the morning, you will be stuffed and set for the day. All the staff we encountered were great. Stay here you will you will love it. My husband said it was the most comfortable bed he's ever slept in.

Clean, quiet, great food, comfortable beds. Historic building, modernized as much as possible while still retaining the historic elements. Excellent location. Good evening meal and full bar in the historic tavern. Beautifully decorated. Great night life, but everything quiets down by midnight and you'll have a great sleep! Fabulous breakfast.

We loved everything about this cozy hotel. The patio is really nice in the morning while drinking coffee. The bar had a great selection of English beers and drinks. Our stay included free Full English breakfast and it was outstanding. Our room had a fridge with sparkling spring water, beer and milk all complimentary. Also coffee, expresso and tea included in our room. Nice ropes, I could go on and on. Great place!

We stayed at The White Star Tavern before a cruise and overall had a very pleasant experience. The location on Oxford Street is perfect — full of charm and within easy walking distance to the cruise terminal and city sights. The hotel arranged for a cab to pick us up at the hotel to the cruise terminal. It was less than a ten pound fare.||The building has a lot of character, and the nautical-inspired décor throughout ties in nicely with Southampton’s maritime past. Dinner at the pub was excellent — fresh, seasonal dishes with great flavour and presentation. Breakfast was my favourite.||Our room was comfortable and clean, with thoughtful touches like robes, good toiletries, one gold beer, one water and milk in the minibar. We did have a minor issue with the air conditioning, which wasn’t cooling properly when we arrived. To the staff’s credit, they addressed it and had it resolved after a couple of attempts.||One thing to note is the strict 3:00 p.m. check-in time. We arrived from a red-eye flight and were clearly exhausted after lunch. The staff kindly let us check in by 2:30, which we really appreciated — but if you’re arriving early, be aware that they do enforce the check-in time pretty closely.||There’s no elevator, so consider that when booking a higher-floor room.||Despite a couple of hiccups, we would definitely return. The service, location, and |food make it a solid choice — especially for a pre-cruise stay.

We stayed at the White Star for 2 nights as a pre cruise hotel. We loved every aspect of it. First of all we enjoyed how unique it was. While chain hotels are fine, it's such a treat to stay in a beautiful one of a kind property.
Upon arrival the staff was extremely friendly. Our well appointed room was located on second floor. It wasn't a big room but certainly was comfortable. For our booking, we had the breakfast package which was included in price of room. This was an outstanding breakfast. We were able to order any hot items off the menu as the nice cold buffet section. We ate dinner here twice but paid out of pocket. Our meals were all terrific.
The hotel is in a nice central walkable location from many city highlights including the city museum, various memorials, shopping, restaurants and waterfront.
As for transport to cruise terminal, we enquired at the front desk and they called a taxi for us which promptly arrived at requested time. The cost was £10. We are looking forward to another stay at the White Star before our 2026 cruise.

As frequent travelers, we like to stay somewhere that feels authentic. This Inn is close to the old town walls and other historic sites so it met our criteria. There is a bar and a restaurant at the property, both of which are excellent, but there are other options all within the same block. ||If you are looking for a large American style hotel room, this isn’t it but the rooms are quaint, the beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms spacious with great water pressure. Walking up a couple flights of stairs is worth it for the experience. And all you have to do is walk downstairs for a pot of tea or a pint. ||The staff here is also wonderful, making you feel welcomed and helping you in any way needed. They’ll happily call you a cab but note that Uber operates here and you can easily find transportation when you are wandering around town. ||If you have the time, take the Red Funnel Ferry over to the Isle of Wight. It only takes an hour. We visited Osborne House but locals told us that West Cowes is a hopping place if historical houses aren’t your thing.

We needed a place to stay the night before our cruise began and I searched for one that wasn’t part of a large chain of hotels. My google search led me to this small inn and I’m so glad it did. The staff were accommodating, friendly and very helpful. Our room on the first floor was small but perfectly adequate and the breakfast was the best hotel breakfast I had ever had! When we checked in, we were asked what time we would like a cab to pick us up the next morning. And the next morning, there was the cab, 15 minutes early. Everything about our stay was perfect. If we find ourselves in Southampton again, we know where we will be staying!
