Why is The Gatekeeper good for fans?

City-centre Wetherspoon on Westgate Street, about 500m from Cardiff Central station, so it’s easy for match-goers arriving by train. The pub shows TNT Sports on multiple TV screens and has a projector, making it handy for early/late kick-offs around your game. Away-fan reviews on Football Ground Guide specifically mention heading to the Gatekeeper pre-match and finding it very busy with a good atmosphere, underlining its use as a neutral city-centre meeting spot on game days. Being a large, multi-level venue with several bars and an all-day food menu also helps groups get served quickly before heading to the stadium or back to the station after the final whistle.

Extremely busy, low staff numbers, waited 40 minutes for our drinks (2 x pints of coke), waited an hour and 15 minutes for food! Extremely hot inside, no air conditioning. Tables hadn't been cleared at all during our 2 hour visit. Staffing levels needs to be better, especially when events are happening!

Will always have this place in my heart. The food is always amazing, and it takes about 10-20 minutes to come. It was not too expensive. It is easily accessible and has a lift. They also have toilets etc.

Don't normally leave bad reviews, but... So bad. Mostly about cleanliness levels. Had to ask four or five times for someone to wipe a table. Mess everywhere. Couldn't enter my pin number on the card machine when I paid because the buttons were sticky. Paid on a different machine and although successful, the pin machine buttons were also sticky. So gross. Couldn't finish my food. If the areas you can see are this bad, I couldn't help wondering what this kitchen was like. Conscious it's a busy site but food cleanliness needs to be maintained as a bare minimum.

Food was terrible and way overpriced for what it was. Ordered an American Cheeseburger and when it arrived it looked like it had been thrown onto the plate from the other side of the kitchen, garnished with a handful of chips dropped from some height and nowt else - no garnish or even a slice of tomato. Burger had a weird tang to it to boot. Would have got a better looking (and better value) burger if I'd gone to Micky Ds or Burger King. Pub was quiet so no excuse really. Not had this issue with the food in other Spoons'

Be aware prices increase for match day/ events held at the stadium opposite this was explained to me by a staff member when I asked for an explanation as to the price difference between the menu and ordering on the app. We chose to eat elsewhere at another wetherspoons close bye

This was a great pub to go for a drink at, with a vibrant design contributed by the likes of the stairs and bar! The Welsh flag is a top addition, the staff were friendly and menus are available at tables. I sat comfortably for a refreshing drink of Black Grape Vodka, although it had not been mixed properly as I could taste vodka too strong at the bottom.

Wetherspoons #116 The Gatekeeper is a large, two story pub, with a mezzanine level, situated on the northern side of the City Centre, nearly opposite the Principality Stadium. It is decorated in a more modern style, and felt more like a department store than a pub, with a glass lift between floors - which appeared to be in frequent use. There is also a second bar on the upper level. Rather busy when I visited and it took a few minutes to get served at the bar. Ordered a pint of Cwrw Gorslas beer, which was in good condition. Had breakfast at the Prince of Wales branch around an hour earlier, so didn't experience food on this occasion.
